Choosing a shower mixer is a crucial step in creating your ideal bathing space. With so many options available on the market, it is essential to consider several factors to choose the mixer that will meet your needs in terms of functionality, style, and durability.

A Robust Warranty

The mixer for your shower is an essential element of your bathroom. As with all other bathroom products, choose items that come with a good warranty. It is possible to obtain a lifetime warranty on the ceramic cartridge and one to five years on the rest.

Features and Options

It is crucial to determine the number of functions you need. Shower mixers generally have between 2 and 4 functions. The first function is the showerhead, installed either on the wall or ceiling. The second function is the hand shower, also known as a handheld shower. The third function, more rarely used, is a bathtub faucet, in the case of a bath-shower, for example. The fourth function can be for an oversized showerhead that offers several functionalities such as rain jets, waterfall, and massage jets.

Finishes and Styles

Then, choose the finish of the mixer, be it chrome, matte black, or gold. Other finishes are sometimes available but much rarer on the market, such as gunmetal grey and rose gold. Some models are square, others more rounded. Choose all your plumbing fixtures in the same shapes for a harmonious effect and to your taste.

Thermostatic Valve vs. Pressure-Balanced Valve: Do You Really Have to Choose?

It is not necessary to require a thermostatic valve for your shower mixer. These are much more expensive and offer few additional advantages compared to a pressure-balanced valve. The thermostatic valve will keep the last set temperature position. As for the pressure-balanced valve, you will need to adjust the temperature with each use. However, it is possible with models where you can adjust the pressure by pulling the mixer handle towards you, to leave the handle in the same left-right position, and therefore, always get the same water temperature with each use, just like with a thermostatic valve. In both cases, thermostatic or pressure-balanced valve, the mixer will maintain a constant temperature if the hot or cold water supply varies during use.

Certification and Compliance

Make sure your product is certified in accordance with the Quebec Plumbing Code and the Régie du Bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). You should find a UPC, CSA, UL, or other logos on the shower mixer. Many online merchants offer products that are not certified. Do not install uncertified products.

Seller Reputation and After-sales Service

Make your choice from a merchant who has spare parts in stock and who enjoys a good reputation.

This way, you will have peace of mind in the event that you need service in the future.
